The Indian Film Industry occupies a prominent place in the Entertainment industry, with the production of nearly 1000 films annually. Several Indians films have received international recognition also. This industry is growing at the rate of 13 % per annum.

Mumbai is the commercial capital of India. It also happens to be the film capital and nerve centre of the Indian Film Industry.

Mumbai has glittering history of achievement from the silent era to sound and colour to Digital Cinema today. Almost 50% of film production takes place here. Many of the film studios that have created history were established in Mumbai and still a chain of the studios is seen from Chembur to Goregaon, such as R.K., Rajkamal, Famous, Mehboob, Kamalistan, Filmistan and Filmcity studios, known as Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari.

However, Film City is the largest Studio Complex in Mumbai. On persuasion of visionary people like Late Shri V. Shantaram, late Shri B.R Chopra and Veteran actor Shri Dilip Kumar, Maharashtra Film, Stage & Cultural Development Corporation Ltd. alias Filmcity was established on 26th September 1977 by the Department of C ultural  Affairs Government of Maharashtra under, the Company Act 1956. It was renamed as Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari in the year 2001 to commemorate the founder of Indian film Industry Dadasaheb Phalke.

Filmcity is sprawled over 520 acres of land, at Goregaon (East). In the suburb of Mumbai. Far from the crowded city, it is easily accessible from any point in the city and is in close proximity of the domestic and international airports.

40 Outdoor locations in the quietly beauty of the land and its sylvan surrounding has lush green expanses and span stretching far several kilometers. The natural contours are interspersed between Hills and Forests and frilled by the beautiful lakes such as Vihar, Powai and one artificial lake. Perhaps no other studios complex has such natural spots to offer to film producers, such as gardens, lakes, Dense forests, hills, valleys, helipad and wide open spaces, and 8 kms. Of WBM long roads etc.

Starting from 2 studios in 1977 now Film City has 16 well equipped, air-conditioned and soundproof studios in different dimensions for live and sync shootings. The studios also have excellent make-up rooms .

The Helipad of Film City (which is fully operational) located at a considerable elevation is a multifaceted and picturesque location by itself. The valley, hilltops and Khandala ghat and br/idge are other added attractions. The Khandala Ghat with rocky, and serpentine road is a very popular location. The artificial water dam ( Lake ) and Khandala br/idge are other major attractions of shooting.

Beside above, there are several other permanent locations such as a temple, church, court, police station, jail, chawl, ATM centre, car parking, shopping arcade, log hut, cottage, tribal village, multipurpose building exterior suitable for college, hospital and hostel entrance etc., Serving the immediate needs of filmmakers. Cafeteria, public toilets and SBI ATM centre are serving immediate needs of producers.

In collaborations with Adlabs now Reliance Media Works, the film City provides world-class facility for Colour Film processing within its complex, managed by highly skilled and trained professionals. It also offers Digital Intermediates DI and Telecine facilities. Also W histling W oods International Institute of Media and Arts provides training in Acting, Direction, Audio designing, Editing, Scripting, Animation, and business of entertainment.

The Corporation provides concession in shooting to Marathi film and other Regional Language films and gives economic packages on long term booking .

Film City is now transforming itself into a technological hub and is gearing up with new projects. Future plans for Film city include more studios and locations .

Thus Film City provides all logistics support like pollution free atmosphere quite ambience and secure location in filmmaking .Various associations and technicians are associated with it and their services can be availed easily. Film City is thus a one stop shop for filmmakers in achieving target of Script to Screen. All these facilities are available at one fifth of the international rates, which would save substantially on production costs without sacrificing on production value.
